Korean Cartoons Mark 100th Year, Challenges and Future of Korean Comics

For over a century, Korean cartoonists have weathered tough times and overcome challenges. On June 2nd, 2009, Korean comics marked their 100th year, and to celebrate, a special ceremony was held at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Gwacheon, in Gyeonggi Province. The event was attended by Minister Yu In-chon of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and other prominent figures working in the comics industry.

The Republic of Korea’s very first comic strip was born on a satirical note. On June 2nd, 1909, artist Lee Do-yeong’s one-cut cartoon strip was published on the first issue of the “Daehan Minbo.” Lee, who is well known for his acute critiques of society, condemned pro-Japanese Koreans and the disconnected, privileged classes, through humorous expressions and satirical illustrations. Comics critic Park Seok-hwan explains.
